The Civilian Control Zone (CCZ) in Paju is a restricted area located just south of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

It was established after the Korean War to ensure security near the border. Unlike the DMZ, civilians are allowed to live and work in this zone, but access is strictly controlled by the military.

Visitors entering the CCZ must pass through checkpoints and are usually required to join authorized tours. Photography and movement can be limited depending on security rules.

Interestingly, because human activity is restricted, the area has become an important ecological zone with well-preserved nature and wildlife. At the same time, it remains a powerful reminder of the ongoing division of Korea and the need for peace.

  2. Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park

    one hour

Imjingak Pyeonghwa Nuri Park (Imjingak Peace Park) is a symbolic site located near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), in Paju.

Once you arrive here, you will have some free time for breakfast and coffee and then tour guide will bring you around the park!

It was built to commemorate the division of Korea and to promote peace and reunification. The park features important landmarks such as the Freedom Bridge, war memorials, and a steam locomotive damaged during the Korean War.

Visitors can enjoy wide open spaces, art installations, and scenic views of the surrounding area, making it both a historical and relaxing place to visit.

  3. Stop 3

    10 min

Freedom Bridge stands over the Imjin River at Imjingak Peace Park. After the Korean War armistice in 1953, prisoners of war crossed this bridge on their way home to the South, which is how it got its name.

Today it is a place of remembrance and hope. Visitors tie ribbons with messages of peace to the fence beside it, and your guide will share the stories behind the bridge. Take your time, take photos, and enjoy a quiet moment at one of Korea’s most meaningful places.

  4. Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park

    30 min Admission included

Step inside for a rare chance to understand North Korea beyond the headlines. Here you can meet a North Korean defector in person, hear their story, and ask your own questions about what life in the North was really like.

You will also watch videos that show North Korea as it truly is, giving you a deeper and more honest picture of daily life, society, and the people. Your DMZ expert guide will help put everything in context, connecting what you see and hear to the history of the Korean War and the divided peninsula.

It is an easy, comfortable way to get close to the border with no hiking and no steep walking.

  6. Stop 6

    20 min

Mangbaedan is a memorial altar located at Imjingak, near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

It was built for people who were separated from their families during the Korean War. Since many could not return to their hometowns in North Korea, they come to Mangbaedan to bow, pray, and honor their ancestors.

The name “Mangbaedan” means “a place to bow while looking toward the north.” On special holidays like Lunar New Year and Chuseok, many visitors perform traditional rites here, expressing their longing for family reunification.

Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of separation, remembrance, and hope for peace.

After going around Mangbaedan, you will see Freedome Bridge, Derailed locomotive, Dokgaedari, Imjingak peace park itself!

Don't forget to buy some special souvenir which is real north Korea money bill!
