This beautiful area was created in 1869 in honor of the famous “Divine Artist” Michelangelo Buonarroti, creator of the renowned David. In the Piazzale MIchelangelo you can also admire the bronze copy of the famous statue David di Michelangelo and a few other copies of statues of the same. In the immediate surroundings many attractions are available.
Basilica San Miniato al Monte

Abbey of San Miniato al Monte. This exquisite, beautiful church is a must-see. Upon seeing it, St. James exclaimed, “Haec est Porta Coeli” — ”This is the gate of heaven.” Come with us to admire its graceful, gentle grandeur and its unique, intricate beauty. This Abbey is situated at a slighter even higher point on the hill, from here too you can admire amazing views on Florence and take breathtaking pictures.

Designed in 1865 by the same architect who designed the square, Giuseppe Poggi, it is open daily from 9 a.m. until sunset.
