Inverness Walking Tour History Myths and Hidden Stories

About this activity

Inverness has been the capital of the Highlands for over 1,600 years. This 16-stop self-guided audio tour takes you on a circular walk starting and ending at Inverness Castle, through the medieval centre and along the banks of the River Ness.

Your guide is Hugh, a native Highlander who brings the city's layered history to life on your phone, at your own pace.

Highlights include:

  • Inverness Castle, over 1,000 years of history with panoramic views of the city
  • The medieval streets and crow-step gabled buildings of the Old Town
  • Inverness Cathedral, full of surprises including five Russian icons gifted by a Tsar
  • A craft distillery powered by the River Ness, one of the lowest carbon in Scotland
  • The real story behind the Jacobite Wars and Bonnie Prince Charlie

How it works:

  • Download the tour app (free, iOS and Android)
  • Follow the GPS map and listen as you walk
  • Pause, rewind, revisit anytime

No guide to wait for. No group to keep up with. Just you, your phone and Inverness.

Itinerary

  1. Stop 1

    Passing by

Standing by the railings and enjoying the view is the ideal way to start our walking tour of Inverness.

We will not be entering the castle. You may choose to enter in your own time.

  2. Falcon Square

    5 min

It's named for John Falconer who was the founder of the Falcon Iron Foundry in 1858

  3. Old High St Stephen's Church

    5 min

You can still see the mark made by musket balls in the wall of the tower, by the door.

  4. Greig Street Bridge

    5 min

This is one of two "bouncy bridges" that we'll encounter on our walk.

  5. Inverness Cathedral

    5 min

Inverness Cathedral, or the Cathedral Church of St Andrew was built, in Gothic style, between 1866 and 1869 by the Inverness architect, Alexander Ross. Admission is free but donations are welcomed if you want to enter.

The tour passes by the church without going inside. If you wish to visit the interior, an entry charge applies. This is entirely optional and not required to complete the tour.

  6. Stop 6

    5 min

World famous Loch Ness is less than 9km upstream. Here's a scoop for you though … the first time Nessie, the monster, was seen – in 565 – it wasn't in the lake, it was in this river.
