2 Day Lesotho Highlands and Sani Pass Adventure from Underberg

About this activity

Most visitors experience Lesotho as a quick day trip to the top of Sani Pass. This tour goes much further, allowing you to spend a night in the heart of the Lesotho Highlands and experience the country at a slower, more meaningful pace.

By combining the iconic ascent of Sani Pass with an overnight stay, cultural encounters, high-altitude exploration, and a choice of mountain activities, this tour offers a richer and more immersive experience than a traditional day excursion. Guests have the opportunity to explore beyond the border post, visit authentic Basotho communities, travel through remote mountain landscapes, and experience life in the world's only country where the entire nation lies above 1,000 metres.

With experienced local guides, spectacular scenery & genuine cultural interaction, this journey showcases the very best of Lesotho in just 2 days. The perfect balance of adventure, culture, comfort, & discovery for travellers wanting to experience the true Kingdom in the Sky.

Itinerary

Day 1 · Sani Pass, Black Mountain, Basotho Culture & the Lesotho Highlands

  1. Sani Pass

    8 hours

Your adventure begins in Underberg, where you meet your guide and transfer into a specially equipped 4×4 vehicle for the journey into Lesotho. Travelling through Himeville and the UNESCO-listed uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, you'll follow the scenic Sani Valley and Mkomazana River towards the legendary Sani Pass. As you ascend South Africa's highest mountain pass, dramatic cliffs, winding switchbacks, and breathtaking mountain scenery unfold around every corner. After crossing into Lesotho, enjoy lunch at Sani Mountain Lodge, home to the famous Highest Pub in Africa (subject to availability). The journey continues deeper into the highlands, including a visit to Black Mountain Pass, one of the highest drivable points in Southern Africa, with spectacular views towards Thabana Ntlenyana. Later, visit a traditional Basotho village to learn about local customs, culture, and daily life before continuing through remote mountain settlements to your overnight accommodation.

Day 2 · Highlands Exploration & Return via Sani Pass

  1. Sani Pass

    6 hours

Wake to crisp mountain air and panoramic views across the Lesotho Highlands. After breakfast, choose between two memorable experiences: a guided mountain hike through the spectacular high-altitude landscapes or a traditional horseback adventure on the famous sure-footed Basotho ponies. Both options offer a unique perspective of the mountains and provide a deeper connection to the people and landscapes of the Kingdom in the Sky. Following your morning activity, return to Sani Top for lunch before beginning the descent of the iconic Sani Pass. Travelling back through dramatic mountain scenery and completing border formalities along the way, you'll enjoy a final opportunity to absorb the grandeur of the Southern Drakensberg. Arriving back in Underberg during the afternoon, you'll leave with unforgettable memories of Lesotho's mountains, culture, and hospitality.
