Because of its vital port location, the city was continuously attacked during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. In December 1778, the first Battle of Savannah took place, resulting in a British occupation that lasted until 1782. Savannah was seized by Union forces in late 1864 during Sherman's March to the Sea. Fortunately, the city was spared the fate of others and was not burned to the ground in the face of Sherman's army.
