Itinerary

  1. Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex

    45 min Admission included

Discover the fascinating history of Mossel Bay at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, one of South Africa’s most important heritage attractions. Located close to the historic harbour, the complex commemorates the arrival of Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 and offers visitors a captivating journey through maritime exploration, local history, and the cultural heritage of the region.

Explore the museum’s historic buildings, and displays that bring the story of early European exploration and the development of Mossel Bay to life. A highlight is the famous Post Office Tree, a centuries-old milkwood tree where sailors once exchanged letters and messages. Visitors can also view the impressive replica of Dias’s Portuguese caravel, offering a glimpse into the type of vessel used during the Age of Exploration.

With its scenic setting and rich historical significance, this complex is the start of our tour for guests wanting to experience the story behind this amazing coastal town.

  2. Mossel Bay

    2 hours

Step back in time and discover the fascinating history, heritage, and character of one of South Africa’s oldest coastal towns. The Historic Downtown of Mossel Bay takes you on an engaging journey through the town’s historic streets, landmarks, and scenic harbour, where stories from the past come to life.

Walk through the charming old streets and admire historic buildings that reflect Mossel Bay’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. Visit over 30 significant buildings, schools, churches, and public landmarks while learning about the people, communities, and events that helped shape the town over the centuries.

The tour also explores Mossel Bay’s harbour and working port's history, highlighting their important role in maritime exploration, trade, fishing, tourism, and the growth of the town. Along the way, enjoy beautiful views of the bay and discover how Mossel Bay developed from an early place of contact and settlement into the vibrant coastal destination it is today.

  3. Cape St Blaize Lighthouse

    45 min

Enjoy beautiful views of the historic Cape St Blaize Lighthouse, proudly overlooking the Indian Ocean from the rugged cliffs above the town. Built in 1864, the lighthouse has guided ships along this challenging stretch of coastline for more than 160 years and remains an important symbol of Mossel Bay’s maritime heritage.

Admire the lighthouse and learn about its history, its vital role in helping to protect passing vessels, and the spectacular coastal landscape that surrounds it.

The experience continues with a walk up to the fascinating Cape St Blaize Cave, located beneath the cliffs along the famous St Blaize Trail. These ancient caves are internationally recognised for their archaeological importance and provide evidence of early human occupation dating back thousands of years.

Visit the War Memorial, where homage is paid to the local men who lost their lives in WW1 and WW2.
