Itinerary

  1. Stop 1

    15 min

Fukuyama is the second-largest city in Hiroshima, located just 20–30 minutes from Hiroshima Station by Shinkansen. If you are traveling from Hiroshima, look out the window as you arrive—you will see Fukuyama Castle right next to the station. Meet your Fukuyama-born local guide here before taking a local bus to Tomonoura.

  2. Stop 2

    30 min

A 30-minute bus ride from Fukuyama Station takes you through the everyday streets of a local Japanese city. Soon, the Seto Inland Sea comes into view as you arrive at Tomonoura Port. It is Japan's only port town where all five major port facilities from around 300 years ago still remain. It is also known as an inspiration for Studio Ghibli's Ponyo.

  3. Stop 3

    30 min Admission included

Built in the late 17th century as a guest hall, Taichoro is famous for its stunning view of the Seto Inland Sea. Centuries ago, visiting Korean envoys loved the scenery, calling it one of the most beautiful views in Asia.

  4. Ota House

    30 min Admission included

Step inside the beautifully preserved home of a wealthy Edo-period merchant. With its original main house and Homeishu brewery, this Important Cultural Property brings the lifestyle and atmosphere of the late Edo period to life.

  5. Joyato Stone Lighthouse

    20 min

Built in the Edo period, this historic stone lighthouse is the iconic symbol of Tomonoura. One of the largest surviving traditional stone lighthouses in Japan, it creates a peaceful and picturesque harbor scene.

  6. Io-ji Temple

    30 min

Leave the crowds behind and walk up the hill to Ioji Temple, a quiet spot overlooking Tomonoura. The uphill path takes a little effort, but rewards you with breathtaking views of the bay and nearby islands.

  7. Houmeishu Irie Toyosaburo Honten

    20 min

Visit a traditional brewery and discover Homeishu, a sweet herbal liqueur made in Tomonoura for over 350 years. Blended with 16 herbs, it was once highly valued throughout Japan. Enjoy a tasting and find a unique local souvenir to take home.

  8. Stop 8

    30 min

    Other Hidden Gems:

Discover hidden photo spots, peaceful historic streets, and charming corners known mainly to locals. You will also visit places connected to Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo, which was inspired by Tomonoura.
