Gothenburg Self Guided Walking Tour Avenyn to Haga Audio Quiz

About this activity

Gothenburg was drawn up by Dutch engineers on marshy ground and rebuilt again and again after fires, yet its character was saved by its own citizens. This self-guided walking tour traces that story from the grand cultural square down to the rescued wooden houses of Haga. Everything runs from your phone, and no app is needed. You get a clear map of all 8 stops, directions through Google Maps, and a short audio story with an interactive quiz at each location. The route runs from Carl Milles' Poseidon at Gotaplatsen down the grand Avenyn, past the beloved Copper Mare and the 17th-century Kronhuset to the old Dutch canal, the cathedral, the neo-Gothic Fish Church and finally Haga for a fika among its wooden houses. Start whenever you like, pause as long as you want and set your own pace. No groups, no fixed schedule and no guide to keep up with. Audio and written content are available in 7 languages.

Itinerary

  1. Gotaplatsen

    Passing by

Gothenburg's cultural square, closed at its southern end by Carl Milles' seven-metre bronze Poseidon, unveiled in 1931 in front of the Gothenburg Museum of Art.

  2. Stop 2

    Passing by

Known simply as Avenyn, this forty-metre-wide boulevard was laid out in the 1860s after the city's ramparts and moat were removed, and is now lined with cafes, restaurants and shops.

  3. Statyn ''kopparmarra''

    Passing by

The equestrian statue of King Karl IX on Kungsportsplatsen, one of the city's best-known meeting points. Locals call it Kopparmarra, the Copper Mare, though it is cast in bronze and the horse is a stallion.

  4. Stop 4

    Passing by

Commissioned by the Swedish War Office in 1642 as a grain and weapons store, this red-brick hall is Gothenburg's oldest surviving secular building. In 1660 it briefly served as the meeting place of the Swedish parliament.

  5. Stop 5

    Passing by

The main canal, cut by Dutch engineers between 1620 and 1622 through marshy ground. Gothenburg's grid of streets was laid out around this waterway, giving the old town its distinctly Dutch character.

  6. Stop 6

    Passing by

Gothenburg Cathedral, designed by city architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg and built on the foundations of two earlier cathedrals destroyed by fire in 1721 and 1802. Note the yellow Neoclassical facade and copper cupola.

  7. Feskekorka

    Passing by

The Fish Church on the Rosenlund canal, a Neo-Gothic market hall by city architect Victor von Gegerfelt. The council commissioned it in 1871 to move the open-air fish trade indoors, and its church-like gables gave it the nickname.

  8. Haga Nygata

    Passing by

The cobbled main street of Haga, Gothenburg's oldest suburb. Its landshovdingehus, houses with a stone ground floor and two wooden storeys above, were built to work around 19th-century fire rules limiting timber buildings to two floors. The district was saved from demolition by resident campaigns and is now full of cafes known for oversized cinnamon buns.
