Vienna Christmasmarket Walk: 5 Markets & Old Town in 3h (DE/EN)

About this activity

Vienna is particularly atmospheric during Advent. Historic squares, narrow alleyways and imperial architecture provide the backdrop for some of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets.

This guided winter walk combines a visit to five different Christmas markets with a tour of Vienna’s historic old town. Each market has its own character – from the arts and crafts stalls on Spittelberg to the festive setting in front of Vienna City Hall and the traditional market on Freyung.

Along the route, there’s the chance to sample winter specialities such as roasted chestnuts, mulled wine and Christmas biscuits. At the same time, the tour places the markets within the historical context of Vienna and its winter traditions. You’ll learn how the city developed from a Baroque imperial capital into a modern metropolis.

The walk also offers an ideal way to find your bearings in the historic centre and ends near St Stephen’s Cathedral. Perfect for rounding off the evening on your own afterwards.

Itinerary

  1. Mariahilfer Kirche

    10 min

Meeting point in front of Mariahilf Church, the starting point of the tour and an important reference point in Vienna’s urban expansion during the 17th century.

This is where the exploration of Vienna during Advent begins within the context of the city’s historical development.

  2. Spittelberg Christmas Market

    40 min

A Christmas market set within a historic quarter characterised by narrow streets and small-scale urban structures.

It reflects a quieter and more intimate side of Advent in Vienna and hosts one of the city’s most charming Christmas markets.

  3. MuseumsQuartier Wien

    15 min

Once the imperial court stables, the MuseumsQuartier is now one of the largest cultural complexes in Europe.

  4. Maria Theresia Denkmal

    5 min

A spacious square designed with clear imperial symbolism.

Major moments of Austrian history are reflected and commemorated here.

  5. Heldenplatz

    10 min

A space of political representation and staging across multiple historical eras.

Several key moments of Austrian history converge here.

Even during Advent, the square’s historical significance remains unmistakable.

  6. Rathausplatz

    20 min

The city’s largest Christmas market, set in front of the neo-Gothic City Hall.

It represents Vienna’s Advent season in its most public and widely recognised form.

  7. Freyung

    20 min

One of Vienna’s most traditional Christmas markets, known for its focus on craftsmanship and historical atmosphere.

The square itself belongs to the city’s oldest urban structures.

  8. Am Hof

    20 min

A Christmas market located on one of Vienna’s oldest squares.

Here, the city’s early history meets its present-day Advent traditions.

  9. Stephansplatz

    10 min

Conclusion of the tour at St Stephen’s Cathedral, the historical and symbolic centre of Vienna.

From here, the city during Advent can easily be explored further on your own.
