Dumaguete Food Tour in English | Relaxed Local Dining

About this activity

Filipino food rewards the curious, but it isn’t always easy for newcomers to know where to start. Some of the best dishes aren’t the most obvious ones, and they’re often overlooked.

This tour is relaxed and flexible, and along the way I will be sharing historical and cultural context to the many influences that shape Filipino cuisine, from indigenous roots to Spanish and modern influences.

After years in the Los Angeles food scene and now living full-time in the Philippines, I help my guests bridge cultural and taste gaps so they can experience Filipino food with confidence.

This activity can also be offered as a private tour for solo guests or groups for an additional fee.

Itinerary

Want to experience Dumaguete's local foods scene comfortably and pressure-free? Dumaguete Food Tour in English was created after guests on my popular Dumaguete nature tour kept asking for my restaurant and café recommendations. Food and drinks are paid directly based on what you choose; tour price covers guide, transportation and a relaxed, private experience. We explore local Filipino food, casual eateries, and hidden favorites—and learn how local history and culture tie in to culinary practices. Choose your own foodie adventure! No two tours are the same, and all are personalized to your tastes. Whether you prefer vegetarian, vegan, seafood, meat, or snacking options, I’ll guide you to places locals love and visitors rarely find on their own. We’ll explore where Filipino food begins, including local markets and selected eateries serving regional favorites. Along the way, you’ll learn how locals choose produce, understand food traditions, and sample dishes that reflect Dumaguete’s everyday food culture. Sunday tours include time at the popular Valencia Farmers Market and feature a slightly expanded itinerary.

Banana Turon — Mashed banana wrapped in rice paper and lightly fried to a sweet, crispy snack popular with Filipinos in the mid-afternoon, or anytime. · Puto Maya and Tskolate — A tasty Filipino breakfast bursting with flavor, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf and fresh ripe mango are served alongside a creamy Tskolate sauce. · Buko Juice — Coconut milk mixed with pulp, sweetened condensed milk and ice, a refreshing drink to accompany a Turon for afternoon snack. · Vegan Paklay — A traditional southern Philippines delicacy for late night gatherings, made a vegan concept dish. · Bacolod Style Inasal — This BBQ'd meat on a stick boasts a special marinade from Bacolod, the food capital of the Philippines. · Steamed Pampano fish with Ginger sauce — A delicate, flaky whole white fish with few bones is served with a tangy ginger sauce. Best served with garlic rice. · Kansi — A favorite for late nights, this simple beef soup is slow cooked and served bone-in for maximum flavor. Garnish with kalamansi lime. · Lechon baboy — A must-try for visiting the Philippines, I take you to the best local spot for this mouth-watering, flavorful example of suckling pig.
