✨ Ride a little train deep into Postojna Cave, then climb into a castle built inside a cliff. In between: two stone villages most visitors never see. ✨
Postojna is Slovenia’s most famous natural wonder. A train carries you kilometres underground through vast halls of stalactites, where you may meet the olm, a blind cave salamander locals once took for a baby dragon.
Back above ground, we head to Štanjel, a hilltop Karst village of stone houses, for lunch with air-dried Karst pršut, local cheese and Vipava Valley wine. Then on to Vipavski Križ, a tiny town still wrapped in its medieval walls.
We end at Predjama Castle, the world’s largest cave castle, set halfway up a sheer cliff. Hear the tale of Erazem, the rebel knight who held out here through a year-long siege thanks to a secret his enemies couldn’t find.

Board an underground train and plunge into Europe's largest show cave — a cathedral-scale world of towering stalagmites, glittering cave pearls, and the five-metre white stalagmite known as the Brilliant. The 90-minute guided tour covers the highlights of a 24 km karst system that took two million years to form, including a stop to spot the cave olm — Slovenia's legendary "baby dragon," a pale amphibian that lives its entire life underground.
one hour Admission not included
Wedged into a 123-metre cliff face, Predjama is the world's largest cave castle and one of Europe's most startling sights — a medieval fortress that looks like the rock simply grew around it. Inside, the story gets better: 15th-century knight Erazem defied the Holy Roman Emperor's siege for over a year, smuggling in supplies through a secret tunnel carved into the cave system behind the castle. How it all ended is a tale best heard on the spot. Wander the chambers, find the hidden passages, and let the legend unfold around you.
Vipavski Kriz
45 min
Vipavski Križ
Barely a kilometre across, Vipavski Križ punches well above its size. This tiny fortified hilltop town was once a thriving Augustinian monastery and trading post — you can still feel that layered past in its intact medieval walls, arched gateways, and quiet cobbled lanes. The reward for the climb is a sweeping panorama over the Vipava Valley wine country below. Find a seat in the square, order a coffee or gelato, and let the afternoon slow right down.

Štanjel
Perched on a hilltop above the Karst plateau, Štanjel is one of Slovenia's oldest and most atmospheric stone villages — narrow medieval lanes, a castle, and views that stretch to the Adriatic on a clear day. Stroll to the Ferrari Garden, a terraced interwar masterpiece designed by architect Maks Fabiani, with fountains, an oval pond, and Mediterranean plantings carved into the cliff edge. Then settle into a traditional stone cellar for Karst prosciutto, homemade cheese, and local wine.
