Presidents, Plantations & the James-Private Virginia History Tour

About this activity

This is my favorite tour - I pick up from your Williamsburg hotel to visit Berkeley, Westover and Sherwood Forest Plantations.

Berkeley’s 1726 Georgian mansion is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and also the birthplace of William Henry Harrison, 9th U.S. President, and his grandson, Benjamin Harrison, 23rd U.S. President. During the Civil War, Berkeley was occupied by General McClellan’s troops. While at Berkeley, General Butterfield composed the familiar tune “Taps”, played by his bugler. We will explore the Native American, Colonial and Civil War artifacts, along with historical paintings and exhibits in the 18th century basement museum.

At Westover, we tour the grounds of this beautiful Georgian mansion, its amazing gardens and secondary buildings.

At Sherwood Forest, we tour the grounds of our 10th U.S. President, John Tyler's home, the longest frame house in America. If scheduling in advance, we can request an interior tour.

This private tour picks you up from your hotel in Williamsburg, Virginia to visit Berkeley Plantation. Berkeley's history begins in 1619 when settlers observed the first Thanksgiving in the American colonies. Berkeley’s 1726 Georgian mansion is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence and governor of Virginia. The estate is also the birthplace of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States, and ancestral home of his grandson, Benjamin Harrison, the twenty-third president. We will explore the Native American, Colonial, and Civil War artifacts, along with historical paintings and exhibits in the 18th century basement museum.

  2. Westover Plantation

    45 min Admission included

We explore the beautiful grounds, gardens, and some of the secondary buildings (like the icehouse). William Byrd II is noted as having the best garden in Colonial Virginia.

  3. Sherwood Forest Plantation Foundation

    1 h 35 min Admission included

Explore Sherwood Forest Plantation, home of 10th U.S. President John Tyler and his fascinating second wife, Julia Gardiner Tyler, who was 30 years his junior and became one of Washington’s most celebrated First Ladies. See America’s longest frame house and beautiful plantation grounds. Tyler’s remarkable story stretches from the White House to the Civil War—he sided with Virginia and was elected to the Confederate Congress. With advance booking, we can request a tour of the historic interior and discover more about the Tyler family and life at Sherwood Forest.
