Itinerary

  1. Greyfriars

    45 min

We begin our tour in the city's historic Greyfriars Kirkyard where JK Rowling spent a lot of time while writing the books. Here we'll see several names on gravestones that inspired characters in the series including William McGonagall and Thomas Riddell.

From here we will also see two potential inspirations for Hogwarts in the form of George Heriot's School and Edinburgh Castle.

  2. Stop 2

    10 min

An area of the city named after Harry Potter? Surely not! See the place where she wrote much of the first book from here.

  3. National Museum of Scotland

    10 min

Harry Potter connections to the Museum and surrounding area - and also learn about the Balmoral Hotel where JK Rowling finished the series.

  4. George IV Bridge

    10 min

Next we come to the historic George IV bridge, including plenty of photo opportunities and a world-famous cafe known as the "Birthplace" of Harry Potter. We will explain why those inverted commas are very important...

  5. Victoria Street

    15 min

One of Edinburgh's most iconic streets, considered to be the real life Diagon Alley. Here our tour ends with some more brilliant stories from your guide.

Meeting point and pickup

Everyone meets at the meeting point.

Meeting point

  • Your guide will meet you in front of Bobby's Sandwich Bar, the orange shopfront. They'll be wearing a wizard costume and an Edinburgh Guide badge. This is on the intersection of Candlemaker Row and George IV Bridge/Forrest Road and NOT inside the graveyard! This is not the "Greyfriars Bobby's" pub.

End point

  • Your guide will drop you off at Victoria Street, only five minutes walk from the start point, and will be able to help you with navigation for your onward journeys.

Using your ticket

Please present your ticket to the guide - it does not have to be printed and display on mobile is completely fine.
