Itinerary

  1. Stop 1

    15 min

A striking white landmark in the heart of Maputo, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was inaugurated in 1944. Designed by Portuguese architect Carlos C. Trindade, its distinctive modernist architecture and tall concrete spire make it one of the city's most recognisable buildings. Located beside Independence Square, it is an important part of Maputo's architectural and religious heritage.

  2. Stop 2

    10 min

One of Maputo's most impressive colonial-era buildings, the City Hall stands at the northern end of Independence Square. Completed in 1947, the neoclassical building was designed by Portuguese architect Carlos César dos Santos. Its grand staircase, imposing columns and symmetrical façade reflect the monumental architecture of the colonial period and make it an important landmark in the city's historic centre.

  3. Praca da Independencia

    7 min

Independence Square is one of the most important public spaces in Maputo and a central point in Mozambique's modern history. The square is dominated by a statue of Samora Machel, Mozambique's first president after independence in 1975. Surrounded by landmarks including the Cathedral and City Hall, the square offers an opportunity to learn about the country's independence and the development of modern Mozambique.

  4. CCFM - Centro Cultural Franco-Mocambicano

    10 min

The French-Mozambican Cultural Centre is one of Maputo's main spaces for cultural exchange. Housed in a historic building in the city centre, it hosts exhibitions, concerts, theatre, cinema, workshops and other cultural events. The centre brings together Mozambican and international artists and provides an interesting perspective on Maputo's contemporary cultural scene.

  5. Casa de Ferro (The Iron House)

    7 min Admission not included

The Iron House is one of Maputo's most unusual architectural landmarks. Designed in the late 19th century using prefabricated iron components, the structure was reportedly designed by Gustave Eiffel, although the exact history of its attribution is debated. Its distinctive metal construction makes it unlike most other buildings in the city and provides an interesting glimpse into the experimental architecture of the colonial era.

  6. Tunduru Botanical Gardens

    10 min

Located in the centre of Maputo, Tunduru Botanical Garden is a peaceful green space surrounded by some of the city's most important historic buildings. Established during the colonial period and later developed as a botanical garden, it features tropical vegetation, mature trees, pathways and ornamental landscaping. It is a pleasant place to appreciate Maputo's greenery and escape the busy streets of the city centre.

  7. Stop 7

    20 min

Maputo's Central Market is one of the best places to experience everyday city life. Located in a historic market building, it is filled with stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, seafood, meat and other local products. The lively atmosphere and interaction with local vendors provide visitors with an authentic introduction to Mozambican food, commerce and daily life.

  8. Maputo Central Railway Station

    15 min

Maputo Central Railway Station is one of the city's architectural treasures and one of the most famous railway stations in Africa. Opened in 1910, the elegant building combines classical architecture with a grand domed interior. The station remains an active railway hub and is closely connected to Maputo's history as an important port and regional transport centre.

  9. Fortress of Maputo

    15 min Admission included

The Maputo Fortress is one of the city's most important historical monuments. Built and expanded over several periods, the fort reflects Maputo's early colonial history and the strategic importance of the area. Inside the fortress, visitors can see historic cannons, military artefacts and monuments while learning about the different communities and historical events connected to the site.

  10. Nucleo De Arte

    15 min

Núcleo de Arte is one of Maputo's best-known artistic and cultural spaces. Established as an artists' cooperative, it has played an important role in supporting Mozambican artists and promoting contemporary creative work. Visitors can explore artworks, sculptures and other pieces while learning more about Maputo's artistic community and the country's evolving contemporary art scene.

  11. Paroquia De Santo Antonio Da Polana

    5 min

Known locally for its unusual “Lemon Squeezer” nickname, this church is one of the distinctive architectural landmarks of Maputo's Polana neighbourhood. Its striking design reflects the modernist architecture that developed in the city during the 20th century. The church is an excellent example of how Maputo combines religious buildings with the bold and experimental architectural styles found throughout the capital.
