The pyramid was built around 741 AD to commemorate the reign of the 27th king of the Tikal dynasty, Yik'in Chan K'awiil, although it may have been built after his death as his burial temple. Throughout its history the Lost World complex was rebuilt several times.

By the 250s-300s AD, his architectural style was influenced by the city of Teotihuacán in the valley of Mexico and included the use of the slope-board style. During the Early Classic period (c. 250–600), the Lost World became one of the city's two focal points, the other being the North Acropolis. From 250 to 378 AD it may have served as a royal necropolis.
