Itinerary

Day 1 · Chennai-Mahabalipuram-Pondicherry

  1. Stop 1

    one hour

In the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel or airport in Chennai.

  2. Mahabalipuram

    7 hours

    Visit Mamallapuram (Approx 1.5 hrs)

Mahabalipuram (also called Mamallapuram) was a 7 th century port city of the South Indian

dynasty of the Pallavas around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It is

believed to have been named after the Pallava king Mamalla. It has various historic

monuments built largely between the 7 th and the 9 th century, and has been classified as a

UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has been a centre for stone carving for hundreds of

years, a legacy displayed in superb temples, bas reliefs and mandapas (narratives carved

into the face of shallow rock overhangs). The most famous example in Mahabalipuram is the

Shore Temple, but the intriguing unfinished temples provide an insight into the sculptor’s

    art.

With the rhythmic sounds of stone carvers chipping away at granite, interesting streets lined

with shops and cafes (serving delicious seafood) and an informal backpacker atmosphere,

Mahabalipuram makes for an enjoyable weekend getaway from Chennai.

  3. Pancha Rathas

    30 min Admission included

Make the first stop of the day at the Pancharathas, or five chariots, a series of monolithic temples built by the Pallavas. These are rock cut monolith temples structures built in the 7th century. Each of the 5 rathas or chariots are dedicated to the lead cast of the Mahabharat epic- Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. There is also a sculpture of an elephant next to the ratha of Nakul-Sahadeva. Once you stand towards the rear of the elephant you will notice that there is an uncanny resemblance between the rear of the chariot and the elephant.

  4. Arjuna's Penance

    45 min Admission included

We next visit Arjuna’s Penace, a bas-relief monument that’s considered one of India’s most magnificent pieces of ancient art, depicting vivid scenes from the Mahabharata. The relief is 100 feet long and 45 feet tall! The main story being told is how Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, performed severe austerities in order to obtain Lord Shiva's weapon.

  5. Krishna's Butter Ball

    30 min Admission included

The next stop is Krishna’s Butterball, a granite boulder that’s poised on a stony slope. This curious boulder seems to defy Newton's laws of gravity and has not moved an inch despite being in this precarious position on the slope for more than a thousand years.

  6. Shore Temple

    45 min Admission included

Our last port of call is the Shore Temple. The magnificent temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal and was an important centre during the reign of the Pallavas when Mahabalipuram was the main port of their Kingdom. Built by King Raja Simha during the early 8th century, the Shore Temple is a landmark in the architectural landscape of India. Marco Polo referred to this as the seven pagodas. The existing temple is the last surviving of the 7 which once stood as a beacon for sea farers.

After seeing sightseeing in Mahabalipuram, you will be transferred to Pondicherry and check-in into the hotel.

Day 2 · Pondicherry

  1. Pondicherry

    8 hours

Established by the French East India Company in the 18 th century, the town has retained a

lot of the French culture, while imbibing a lot of the Tamil way of life. This has led to a

burst of contemporary cultural creativity which rides comfortably with its enduring French

architecture, wide boulevards (with French names) and its beautiful seafront promenade.

Pondicherry has two distinct parts, the French and the Tamil. The French quarter has

structures in the European classical style, whereas the buildings in the Tamil quarter are in

the vernacular style of Tamil Nadu. The two styles have influenced each other with the

result that many buildings in both parts of the town are a harmonious blend of European

and Tamil architectural patterns. It is this cross-influence of building patterns that gives the

old town its distinct architectural vocabulary, which can be termed “Pondicherry-ness”.

  2. Sri Aurobindo Ashram

    45 min Admission included

Sri Aurobindo Ghosh is arguably the most famous citizen of Pondicherry. The tour begins with a visit to his memorial at the Aurobindo Ashram. Guests will get a brief experience of his life and times as well as his philosophy and revolutionary ideas. The memorial also has a section on Sri Aurobindo’s famous disciple Mirra Alfassa. It is the perfect place for meditation.

  3. Pondicherry Lighthouse

    40 min Admission included

A French heritage walk is organized through the heart of the city where one can see glimpses of exquisite French style of architecture. This heritage walk will help you appreciate the French connection with Pondicherry.

  4. Stop 4

    40 min Admission included

We visit a unique factory which makes hand made paper. Sri Aurobindo Paper Factory started 50 years ago and makes paper from 100% cotton rag pulp. In this visit guests will experience how the paper is produced from cotton rags and then processed with techniques like silk screen printing and marbling.

  5. Statue Of Gandhi

    30 min Admission included

A walk through the famous promenade of Pondicherry facing the lovely Bay of Bengal follows this.

  6. Auroville

    one hour

Post lunch we travel to Auroville, the radical concept of a global village where thousands of people from across the world have given up their nationalities and are living as global citizens. Auroville was conceived with the vision that- “There should be a somewhere on earth, a place which no nation could claim as its own, where all human beings of goodwill who have a sincere aspiration could live freely as citizens of the world and obey one single authority, that of the supreme truth; a place of peace, concord and harmony…”. Guests will also get to see the various ways in which its citizens practice sustainable way of life. Matri Mandir is a giant dome for silent meditation. Guests can see it from outside on a day visit.
