Originally built in 1796, this temple to Mazu (Goddess of the Sea) was completely burned down during a local clan war in 1859.
Rather than giving up, local residents rebuilt the entire district in 1864, placing this temple at its absolute center. Food stalls began gathering around its steps to feed worshippers—sparks that literally created the world-famous Shilin Night Market!
