The Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral is the main Catholic temple in Montevideo. It is located in the Old City, opposite the Plaza Constitución or Plaza Matriz, named precisely because the Cathedral is the Matrix Church.
It has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1975.
Its origins date back to Viceroyal times, when in 1740 a brick church was built on the site of the cathedral. Subsequently, in 1790, the foundation stone was laid to begin construction of the new building which is neoclassical in style. Finally the temple was consecrated in 1804.

It was inaugurated on October 10, 1868 as a market supplier of fruits, vegetables and meats to the ships that arrived at the Montevideo Bay and to the wealthy families that then erected their mansions in the surrounding area.
