Come along on a fantastic family-friendly Ice Cave tour in Vatnajökull glacier. Those travelling to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon should not miss this excursion as an ice cave tour is truly a unique experience.Your adventure starts at Jökulsárlón where your guides for the day will meet you and hand out equipment for the ice caves. You'll then board a modified 4x4, or a super jeep, to get to the caves. The drive up to the caves takes only about 30 minutes, but it is exciting, and the magnificent scenery on the way up there will surely take your breath away. The guides are very informative and entertaining; they will tell you facts about the area, stories from the community, fairytales and everything you would like to know. When you arrive, there is a short walk to the ice caves, and your guides continue to inform you about the great Vatnajökull glacier. Once in the cave, you will get a good time to explore, take pictures and just enjoy yourself on your vacation.

We meet at Jökulsárlón and travel from there for about 30-40 minutes on our Super Jeeps to Breiðamerkurjökull. Where we will visit the everchanging Ice caves.

The ice caves are formed naturally and each fall the guides go “ice cave hunting”, looking for new caves and see if any of the old ones are still there. So, the structure and condition can vary significantly between years. Each day, the guides decide which cave they will visit, all depending on the weather and, of course, the safety of the guests.

Our Super Jeeps are parked on the Bus-parking lot behind the food trucks. You will find our Jeeps there, with our Glacier Journey Logo on the side of the Jeep. Our Guides will be somewhere close to the Jeeps.

Your guide meets you at the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón) parking lot 15 minutes before departure.
The distance from Reykjavík is 370 km. Glacier Journey does not provide any transportation from Reykjavík to Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón).
We recommend that you have a reservation at a guesthouse or in a hotel in the area the night before the 10.30 am tour. Here can you find accommodation: https://visitvatnajokull.is/accommodation/
Note that we provide helmets and crampons, we do not rent out or provide any outdoor clothing or boots for the Ice Cave tour.
Important Notes
- Due to the popularity of the ice caves you can expect groups from other companies inside the cave at the same time as our groups.
** Be sure to look at your email and phone the day before the tour. There can always be last minutes change due to weather or other uncontrollable conditions.
*** If the Ice cave is not accessible due to some reasons, we always offer alternatives.
When taking a tour with us – it is good to be located somewhere close to the area.
If you have a morning tour with us – it’s best to stay somewhere in the area the night before.
If you have an afternoon tour with us – it’s best to stay somewhere in the area the night after.
