The Colossi of Memnon: Twin Guardians of Luxor
Standing prominently along the West Bank road, the Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues representing Pharaoh Amenhotep III. These towering, 18-meter-high monuments have stood in this exact spot for over 3,400 years, originally guarding a vast mortuary temple complex that has since vanished.
What you will see:
Massive Engineering: Each monolithic statue weighs approximately 720 tons, showcasing ancient transport and carving capabilities.
Historical Graffiti: Following an ancient earthquake, the northern statue famously "sang" at dawn due to temperature shifts, drawing early Greek and Roman travelers who carved graffiti into the base.
