Over 1,200 years old, it is famous for the story of a monk who prayed here for gold to complete the Great Buddha of Nara; when gold was discovered, he built a temple around the sacred rock where his statue stood, giving rise to the “Stone Mountain Temple.”
Dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, Ishiyama-dera has long been a beloved place of pilgrimage, especially for women.
