The most interesting fact of this monastery is the fact that it was built on the site of the royal prison, where Gregory the Illuminator was previously imprisoned – the patron saint and the first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church by the Armenian king for 13 years. From the territory of the monastery, there is an unusual view of the biblical mountain Ararat.

In 874 the wife of the Syunik prince Vasak and the daughter of the king Ashot Bagratuni – Mariam built here two churches – St. Arakelots and St. Astvatcatsin.

Saghmosavank Monastery

The monastery complex Saghmosavank is located on the right bank of the Kasakh River, in the village of Saghmosavan. According to tradition, Saghmosavank was founded by Grigor Lusavorich (Grigory the Illuminator). The St. Sion Church was built by Prince Vache Vachutian in 1215. It is a cross-shaped inside and rectangular outside church with a high cylinder-shaped drum and a conical dome. The facades of the church are decorated with “Armenian hollows”.
